Blur bass player Alex James has said Glastonbury does not need them to fill the Friday night headliner slot.
The Britpop pioneers, who headlined in 1998 and 2009, have backed Florence And The Machine – who have been bumped up the running order – to make a successful appearance at the top of the bill.
The Florence Welch-fronted band’s headline show comes after Dave Grohl, front man with American rock group Foo Fighters, had to pull out of the Somerset festival after fracturing his leg on stage in Sweden last week.
James, speaking ahead of his band’s show at Hyde Park in London tonight following the release of their new album The Magic Whip, said: “We did Glastonbury in 2009, I think that was one of the best gigs we have ever done. I think you can only do Glastonbury once a decade.”
Asked if his band had been approached to step in for the Foo Fighters, James said: “I think we are really looking forward to playing around the world. We don’t want to overdo it (at Glastonbury).
“I think Florence will step up to the plate there, I don’t think they need Blur there on Friday.”
The first night of music at the Somerset festival begins on Friday.
