Bob Harris is more than just a popular DJ and broadcaster, he is a national treasure.

A rock & roll icon, he hung out with John Lennon, George Harrison, Brian Wilson, Marc Bolan and Led Zeppelin – and even had a run in with the Sex Pistols. But it is as a darling of the country music world that he is best loved today, being instrumental in launching British Americana acts into the big time.

Bob’s role as a champion of country music is celebrated in hit new film Wild Rose – which sees up-and-coming artist Rose Lynn (played by Jessie Buckley) determined to get Bob’s ear in her quest for the limelight. Bob has a cameo appearance playing himself in the film.

The film, which also stars Julie Walters, is directed by Tom Harper, whose credits also include Peaky Blinders and War and Peace.

On Wednesday the film is given a special screening at East Oxford’s lovely Ultimate Picture Palace (UPP) – followed by a Q&A with Bob hosted by The Oxford Times Features Editor Tim Hughes.

There will also be live music from UK Americana band The Southern Companion, who feature on the soundtrack.

Bob says of his cinema debut: “I’m so proud to play a small part in this beautiful, sensitive and touching film. It is one of the most thrilling things I have ever done and I was so excited to be a part of it. Jessie is such a major talent so I loved working with her. And seeing it at the cinema was amazing.”
