I blame Purple Ronnie. Ever since the childish-looking scribbly figure popped up (a good few years ago now), there have been designers who think deliberately naive slogans in wonky writing is cool and funny.

It's all right, in small amounts. But Puccino's takes it too far. Every wall, menu or poster sports a smart-alecky remark - presumably to distract from the fact that this chain, at least in Golden Cross, Oxford, isn't the best. My colleague Katherine had a bad experience eating here in 2005 and it seems it's still not firing on all cylinders.

When I popped in this week for a late breakfast, I was unable to order a frothy cuppa because the coffee machine was broken and the service was slow despite there only being a few customers.

And while there was nothing wrong with my 'Madrid' panini, featuring tasty chorizo as well as mild cheese, the salad which came with it (the two together cost £5.95) was positively drenched in mayonnaise - which leaked out into the takeaway bag.

As for the slice of pecan and walnut cake (£2.85) which I carried off for my elevenses, that was okay without being memorable.

In defence of Puccino's, I'll say that the staff are friendly and when I've had juices at other branches, they have been most refreshing.
