Bringing a beloved children’s character to life on stage can be a stressful experience, but, as actor Ceri Ashcroft tells KATHERINE MACALISTER, the joy it brings is priceless The pressure is enormous, Ceri Ashcroft of Charlie and Lola territory says.

But then playing Lola, one of the country’s most beloved characters has got to be done properly.

“Yes it’s a massive responsibility and you can feel it as soon as you come out on stage,” Ceri, above, explains, “so you have to be very specific because children know the characters so well.

“And compared to an adult show it’s totally different.

“Everyone knows Romeo and Juliet, and yet it can be interpreted in many different ways. But Charlie and Lola need to be totally in character,” the 28-year-old adds.

Which is why creator and author Lauren Child has been involved to ensure the stage show is as authentic as possible.

“I think for her it’s more about protecting the concept of how Charlie and Lola look so that they are the same as the TV series.

“Because that’s what the children have imagined and what they expect – Charlie and Lola need to be true to life even though they aren’t real,” Ceri laughs.

Based on five books, Charlie and Lola’s Best Bestest Play uses 2D puppets, with their voices being orchestrated by the originals to maintain continuity, meaning Ceri doesn’t have to talk, leaving her free to concentrate on the puppeteering side.

“I think I was chosen as I was most like Lola, energy and looks wise, and as this is my first puppeteering job, they had to train me up.

“So it’s more about mirroring Lola and how she moves and reacts.”

But in terms of audience appreciation and participation, Ceri gets to feel the love every day on stage.

“You can tell when the audience is enjoying themselves because they start shouting out questions and comments. So yes, it is a bit like being heckled, but in a nice way,” Ceri smiles.

“So it’s been a really good experience being on stage and not focusing on yourself, a very different kind of performance and a new string to my bow.”

As for Charlie and Lola themselves, Ceri puts their success down to the great brother and sister relationship: “Both parents and children can relate to that, and although obviously Lola is my favourite, Charlie has a lot of patience,” she says diplomatically.
