If you never go to the theatre any other time of the year, you really can’t afford to miss it at Christmas.

And as one might expect from the Pegasus in Magdalen Road, East Oxford, their Christmas production is deliciously seasonal, intimate and enchanting.

Grimm and Grimmer tells the tale of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, better known as the Grimm Brothers, who famously wrote and recorded some of the world’s most famous fairytales.

Written, produced and performed by the Gonzo Moose company, it is typically wild, crazy, inspired and devilishly funny, and while perhaps a tad too adult in its humour and references for very young children, it’s a wonderful bit of festive whimsy that should delight most family audiences.

On a personal level, I was intrigued and constantly surprised by its inventiveness, its freshness and its originality (although if you watched and loved the Shrek movies, you should find yourself more than comfortable in the Gonzo world of make-believe).

Brought to life by the three-strong cast of Seamus Allen, Lauren Silver and Mark Conway, their merry tale unravels at a swift, blink-and-you-miss-it pace (Lauren Silver incidentally, plays the brothers’ sister, Lotti).

It’s physical, atmospheric and cleverly charts the course between appealing to a younger audience while keeping mum and dad happy.

Just remember it isn’t a panto.

As usual, the theatre itself proves very welcoming and is beautifully decorated, and there’s that buzz which alwaus makes visiting the Pegasus so enjoyable.

Grimm and Grimmer is at Pegasus until December 30. Call the box office on 01865 812 150.
