CAST-offs by Annie Lennox and Colin Firth are among the goodies on offer at a jumble sale with a difference this Saturday.

For the second year, celebrity donations will be up for grabs at Jumble Fever – a sale organised at Oxford Town Hall by The Oxford Circle, a regional branch of The Circle NGO.

Eurythmics star Annie, who co-founded the group has donated items including a black velvet dress, a Club Monaco raincoat and Vivienne Westwood Red Heart earrings and bracelet.

Colin Firth, who starred in The Kings Speech, Paddington, Bridget Jones and The Kingsman, has donated a bag which was given to him on the set of the Mary Poppins film.

The bag is based on the carpetbag with magical powers which is carried by Mary Poppins and was presented to him as a souvenir of his time on the movie. Colin has signed it especially for Jumble Fever.

Claire Lewis, one of the organisers of Jumble Fever, said: “It’s so kind of Colin to give us such an amazing donation. The bag will be one of the raffle prizes at the sale and whoever wins it will go home with an incredible one-off item with a great story behind it.

Oxford Mail:

“This year Annie Lennox has also generously donated a number of very special items including a stunning black velvet dress, a Club Monaco raincoat and Vivienne Westwood Red Heart earrings and bracelet. Some of these donations will be in the jumble sale and others will be part of the raffle alongside Colin’s Mary Poppins bag and tickets for Creation Theatre, vouchers for the Ashmolean and Pizza Pilgrims, local attractions and workshops.”

The Circle is an organisation of women working to achieve equality for women and girls. Funds raised will be split between two causes supported by the NGO: Nonceba, a shelter in South Africa for survivors of domestic violence and trafficking, and the Marie Colvin Journalists’ Network, which trains, mentors and supports young female journalists in the Arab world.

Annie, who had hits with Walking on Broken Glass, No More I Love You’s and the Eurythmics’ Thorn in My Side, said: “The two projects that Jumble Fever is supporting are both very close to my heart and illustrate why the work of The Circle is so important.

Oxford Mail:

“Whether we’re amplifying women’s voices or giving them support and opportunities, everything we do works towards achieving equality for women and girls.”

Commentator, activist, TV presenter and The Clothes Show personality Caryn Franklin will be a special guest at the event. She said: “Jumble Fever is an excellent initiative, bringing the Oxford community together, showing that recycling and upscaling clothes can be fun and an effective way to challenge consumerism and prevent the growing landfill issue.”

Oxford Mail:

There will also be entertainment throughout the day, including performances from Oxford bands The Mother Folkers and The Kirals, and Magician Jamie Jibberish, aka Magic for Smiles, who performs for refugee children in Turkey and Jordan.

MC for the day will be drag artist Her Who, with tunes supplied by DJs Jodie Hampson from Dollar Shake and Donwella from Coop Audio. Food and drinks will be supplied by ‘food with a conscience’ team Waste2Taste.

Jumble Fever 2019, which was held at Botley’s Tap Social Movement, attracted over 500 people and raised more than £5,300.

The Oxford Circle chairwoman Leanne Duffield, said: “Jumble Fever 2019 was a fantastic event and this year it will be even bigger and better. And the jumble sale is just the beginning for The Oxford Circle this year as we have 19 more events planned for 2020. All events will raise money or awareness for marginalised women around the world.”

Jumble Fever will take place on Saturday from 11am-4pm at Oxford Town Hall. Entry is £3 but if you bring a bag of donations and arrive before 1pm it’s just £1.

Shoppers can browse clothing for men, women and children, including prom dresses and designer labels, and buy tickets for a celebrity raffle – in which they’ll have a chance to win Colin Firth’s bag.
