Sell your mum, mortgage the kids, put your kidneys on eBay, but raise the money to see this show.

It's all about muppets - and you'll notice that's muppets with a small 'm' instead of a capital, and the reason for that is that despite looking a) identical to Muppets b) sounding like Muppets c) and acting like Muppets d) the Sesame Street-style set, they aren't Muppets. Why? I quote: "Avenue Q has not been authorised or approved in any manner by the Jim Henson Company or Sesame Workshop."

You can understand why: there are sex scenes, gay puppets, scenes of sexual self-gratification and an occasional use of the 'f word'. The songs include If you were gay, Everyone's a little bit racist, The Internet is for porn and The more you ruv someone (sung by an oriental woman...) But it's such a happy musical, performed with energy and joy, I think anyone would be hard pressed to be offended.

Despite its various subjects - porn, sex, losing (and regaining, believe it or not) your virginity - it never becomes cynical, cheap or nasty. And it has the most up-lifting finale. See this show and you'll feel like you've swum with dolphins.

Avenue Q is at the Noel Coward Theatre, London. Tickets cost from £17.50. Call 0870 850 9175.
