Never work with animals or children is good advice for some, but roundly ignored by James Campbell, the world's only stand-up comedian for kids, who brings his hilarious and entertaining show to Banbury's Mill Theatre tonight (Friday, June 1).

So what's his secret?

"I adapt the material slightly," says James, who also runs Comedy Club 4 Kids, to teach stand-up skills.

"There's no point talking about something that they won't understand - I don't talk about politics or anything. But I will explore topics and compare them, such as the Iraq war and bullying at school. And I improvise and adapt a lot, depending on the audience.

"Nothing's off limits. I don't swear or tell blue jokes for adults that the kids won't understand. But what's most important is not to underestimate children or their sense of humour."

In other words, the Londoner talks of everything that is relevant to children and anyone who has ever been a kid - from parents to Playstations, why we have hair and what he had for breakfast. James has performed at more than 1,000 schools and festivals all over the world. So does he consider himself a glutton for punishment?

"No," he says, sounding surprised.

"Children are a more honest audience and they're sober, so you don't have to dumb things down. And children have much better imaginations and are used to listening."
