Interviews Tips

1) Preparation

  • The interviewer will have spent time preparing for their conversation with you, reading your CV and any other documents you have supplied in your application and it’s worth you doing the same!
  • Take the time to review your application and the job description for the role you have applied for.
  • It’s also worth looking at the company website or careers site to get more of a feel for the organisation you are applying to.

2) Logistics

  • If you’re going for a face to face interview, it’s worth allowing a bit of extra time for your journey so you don’t need to worry if you get slightly held up. We all know the A34 can be a bit unpredictable!
  • If your interview is over the telephone, make sure you can arrange a quiet and comfortable location where you won’t be disturbed. If you’re taking the call on your mobile, make sure you have a clear signal and enough battery left to last all the way through the call.
  • Finally, be sure to allow enough time for the interview itself. Interviewers should let you know in advance how long the interview will take, and it’s worth allowing a bit of leeway so timing worries don’t distract you.

3) Make an impression

  • A smile and a firm handshake go a long way!
  • Dress-wise, go for an outfit you’re comfortable in which is appropriate to the environment you’re interviewing in.
  • If your interview is over the telephone it’s still worth smiling – you wouldn’t believe the difference it makes!

4) During the interview

  • Don’t be afraid to pause briefly after you’ve been asked a question to consider your answer.
  • Be honest!
  • Try to ensure you’re making regular eye contact with your interviewer.
  • Turn your mobile off.

5) Remember it’s a 2-way process!

  • The interview is your opportunity to find out more about the company and the role, so don’t be afraid to ask questions about the things that are important to you!
