Twelve jobs are being created with the opening of a new discount supermarket in Oxford.
Aldi will finally open its doors to the public on August 27, ten years after it originally bought the site on Botley Road next to the Toys ‘R’ Us store.
The 1,200 sq m store has taken eight months to build and will have 200 car parking places.
Aldi’s plan for a larger, 1,700 sq m store was rejected by the city council in 2007 because of flooding concern raised by the Environment Agency (EA).
The Botley Road area suffered severe flooding in the city that summer. But the supermarket chain appealed against the decision leading to a public inquiry last April.
At this, Aldi submitted plans for a smaller store with flood prevention measures that met with EA approval.
Store operations director, Jochen Vogel said: “An increasing number of shoppers are looking for top quality products at affordable prices as they fight back at the credit crunch. We are busy planning a spectacular opening day.”
