The walls are constructed from SIPS panels (Structural Insulated Panel System) timber faced with a dense insulation core to provide high levels of insulation. The panels are faced internally with two layers of plasterboard and externally with a Sto render (thin-coat synthetic render) on cement based boards.

The heating system is gas fired hot water underfloor heating throughout fed from a combination boiler that also provides instantaneous hot water. All floors are highly insulated, and each floor is split into separate room zones, each with its own thermostatic control. The house is designed to be as airtight as possible. Ventilation is provided by a whole house heat recovery system that recovers heat from air being exhausted and transfers it to incoming fresh air. In summer the system bypasses the heat recovery process and just provides fresh air.

The roofs on both the house and the garden studio are finished in zinc cladding on a very highly insulated timber structure. PV panels are fixed to the main house roof and are rated at 3.68KW. The electricity generated is the subject of an agreed feed in tariff with EON energy.
