RESIDENTS are being encouraged to buy at least one item from a local independent shop to celebrate Independents’ Day next month.

The day, on July 4, is aimed at promoting independent businesses and the diversity they bring to the High Street.

The event is a national campaign by Skillsmart Retail and the National Skills Academy for Retail.

And to raise awareness, sole trader retailers in Oxfordshire will display the Independents’ Day logo in their shop windows.

Judith Nimmo-Smith, cabinet member for economic development, property and technical services at South Oxfordshire District Council, said: “We have a vast number of independent retailers to be proud of.

“Residents value the contribution our retailers make to life in the district and I’m sure they will give them their full support on July 4.”

Elaine Ware, cabinet member for economy, leisure and property at Vale of White Horse District Council, added: “Local shops can make the difference between a lively and diverse town and one that is stifled by an over-reliance on chain stores.

“We are lucky to have so many interesting and different retailers who provide neighbours and visitors with a varied shopping experience.”

Jane Rexworthy, head of the National Skills Academy for Retail, said: “Independents’ Day aims to highlight the huge range of skills successful independent retailers provide to make our towns and cities such interesting and varied places.”
