Oxford United fans looking to start their own businesses have been offered a helping hand after the club linked up with a special charity.

The U’s have joined forces with the Fredericks Foundation which provides small loans for people who are unable to find financial support from traditional sources such as banks.

As well as providing cash for applicants who can include the long-term unemployed, the fund also provides a package of support and mentoring from business experts to give the new enterprise the best possible start.

U’s chairman Kelvin Thomas said: “We are happy to partner with Fredericks to the benefit of the local community and hope our ongoing relationship will provide the impetus for businesses to succeed in such difficult economic times."

The Oxfordshire branch of Fredericks based at the Monument Business Park, Chalgrove, was launched earlier this year and recently received £60,000 from a Government scheme, through Oxfordshire County Council, to spread the initiative through the county.

Fredericks Oxfordshire chairman, William Barton, business development officer for West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “Fredericks Oxfordshire isn’t just about lending money, it is about helping local businesses succeed.”

As well as being made available to supporters, the club’s corporate members are being urged to get involved as investors in the fund.

Fredericks client manager Tim King said: “A great new partnership has come to life.

“There are many ways people can get involved with the scheme ranging from fundraising and investing to mentoring and referring new clients.”
