EIGHT jobs have gone at academic publisher Taylor & Francis, based at Milton Park, near Abingdon, after the work was outsourced to India.

The redundancies affected 11 assistant editor posts at imprint Europa Publications, with the function now offshored to New Delhi.

Three new associate editor posts have been created at Europa to co-ordinate the work.

Fiona Swarbrick, assistant organiser for publishing at the National Union of Journalists, said the remaining Europa staff had concerns about the changes, “because it has been repeatedly found that when things are offshored the quality isn't always what was hoped”.

A spokesperson for Taylor & Francis confirmed the redundancies to The Oxford Times but declined to comment further.

Taylor & Francis is part of Informa group, which last month said its publishing business was proving more resilient to the economic downturn than other parts of the group such as its events business.

Taylor & Francis increased sales by 13 per cent and profits by 32 per cent in its half year to the end of June. Publishing revenues grew to £322m, compared with £286m a year earlier.
