The sun shone for Cogges Spring Fair, the first special event of the season for Witney's heritage farm.

Hundreds helped celebrate a day of farming and the countryside with steam engines, craft and butter-making demos and latest residents, the newly born lambs.

Ozzy the Cotswold Ram and Oxford Down Ram Bobbin made a star appearance, both from Yew Tree Flock along with members of the Cotswold Sheep Society.

Visitors could learn about Witney’s wool history with Cotswold fleece displays and crafting demos, or see peg weaving and try rag rugging with Cogges’ volunteers.

Wychwood Forest Trust’s Toby Swift was on hand to talk about conservation projects in the region and Cogges’ new artist-in-residence, Alex Long, was out with his easel capturing the blooming wisteria.

It was full-steam ahead with a Marshall Steam engine and a full size Wallis and Steevens steam roller on show, and a half-size Burrell 'Devonshire' traction engine and unique half size Ransomes baler in action, the only one in 6-inch scale ever made.

General Manager Guy Reed said: “What an amazing day, it was lovely to see so many visitors enjoying the farm.

"The sun was shining on our very first Spring Fair and Ozzy and Bobbin, our visiting Cotswold and Oxford Down Rams, stole the show as did our beautiful newly born lambs.

"Children planted sunflowers, made Bug Hotels and hooked a duck to name but a few activities, but everyone also just kicked back and relaxed in the sunshine.

"Cogges is such a special place to me and so many, it’s a small gem that harks back to bygone days and simple pleasures, being with friends and family and within a wonderful natural setting.

"I hope we created a wonderful day of making memories for many, thank you to everyone who came and supported us."

There will be lot’s going on for May bank holiday and half term, with more Bug Hotels, outdoor activities and a new nature walk in the meadow where children can follow a trail of wild animals.

For the summer, Cogges is creating paths and making the meadow much more accessible, introducing new habitats for wild birds and insects and looking to increase the diversity of the fauna.

Mr Reed said: "We are also aiming to reintroduce some livestock – it’s a big project but one we hope will benefit everyone.

"As a visitor said to me yesterday, who knew that this fantastic idyllic green space existed in Witney and on our doorstep!

"I personally feel it’s just a wonderful place to spend time, and the team and myself are delighted that so many visitors agree with us.

"Come and visit, share your experience of Cogges with friends and family and help us protect this amazing space for generations to come.”

The fun continues with the ‘Big Band in the Barn’ on Saturday May 18 – an evening of music and vintage vibes from the fabulous Big R Big Band with dancing, summer bar and BBQ.  See what’s on at cogges.org.uk
