Oxford cyclists join for ride to call for safer roads

The Kidical Mass Oxford ride on April 28, which is part of a global movement for improved road safety, saw 142 people get on their bikes.

The group, which included participants of all ages and abilities, convened at Broad Street through four volunteer-led feeder rides from across the city.

There, participants enjoyed drinks and stickers, and listened to deputy lord mayor councillor James Fry, before setting off for a loop of the centre of Oxford.

Riders came together from different parts of the city, with the biggest contingent coming from East Oxford.

Ride marshal Danny said: "Despite the East Oxford feeder ride being the most difficult - it came via the Plain - it outnumbered the other three rides put together, showing the huge effect the transport improvements in East Oxford have had on making cycling more inclusive and accessible."

The event called for protected, accessible and connected cycle provision to reduce conflict and congestion.

Parent and ride leader Owen added: "The Kidical Mass ride showed that Oxford’s streets belong to Oxford’s children as much as anyone else.

"Our volunteer marshals kept everyone protected.

"But it shouldn’t need this much organisation for families to travel safely into the city centre."
