COUNCILLOR Rodney Rose has given up any idea of helping buses get through the rush-hour jams in Oxford.

The latest scheme for the Kennington and Hinksey Hill roundabouts (Oxford Mail, May 10) will only improve things in the short term.

Hamburger roundabout number three will increase capacity, but in two or three years we’ll be back to square one.

More and more people will be encouraged to use their cars to get to work instead of switching to buses, bikes, trains or, of course, walking.

The county council should introduce bus priority lanes and traffic lights during the rush hours.

Already in Oxford most people travel to work by bus.

It is absurd that buses from Abingdon, for example, have to queue behind cars and lorries to get into Oxford.

Extra inbound bus lanes in the morning and outbound in the evening, would work wonders.

The Oxford roundabout roadworks will cause delays for months.

So let’s get it right and include proper bus and bicycle priority from the start.
