I agree with Patrick Moles (ViewPoints, May 4) that the traditional Oxfordshire pronunciation of the River Cherwell is with an “ar” rather than “er”.
This is confirmed by the spelling of a village near the river’s source: Charwelton.
According to experts in Old English, our Saxon ancestors named the river cearre-wella meaning ‘winding stream’.
