Stop wasting money

In his letter (Wednesday’s Oxford Mail) Chris Halford complains about the vast amount of tax on petrol and diesel and blames the Government for high prices, but like most people he ignores the fact that, whatever Government we have, if they were to cut tax on fuel they would increase tax on something else.

If the Government and, come to that, councils stopped wasting taxpayers’ money they would not need as much money and could cut taxation all round.

We have to suffer cuts in services to save money and, at the same time, the Government is giving billions of pounds away to other countries.

Also, our councils plead poverty but cannot stop wasting our money – one very good example is the 20mph speed zones which the county council now admit was money wasted.

It is not just the county – district and parish councils are just as bad, because they do not know, or care, what they are doing.

Chris also appears to make excuses for the oil companies, which increase their fuel prices every few days to boost their profits and every year announce record profits. All they are doing is taking advantage of the situation.
