Grapes is all about ale

The Food and Drink page (Thursday’s The Guide), with Katherine Macalister again amazed me.

The Grapes, in George Street, Bath Ales’ first outlet in our area, is surely going to make interesting reading.

Wrong.

The new owners did get the briefest of mentions, but nothing of their history or varied range of real ales hit the press.

With Katherine MacAlister is that a surprise to regular readers?

Instead we were treated to the usual brief description of the venue.

Then reams and reams of the menu and its culinary delights. Ms MacAlister may lick her lips over ham and mash, real ale drinkers are more likely to do so reading of SPA, Gem, Barnstormer or any other of the excellent Bath Ales brews.

Finally, we were regaled with a drink element to the feature “a coffee watching the world go by”.

Perhaps one day we might read of a pub’s beer range and their ales’ qualities.

Or is it more likely that Ms MacAlister will announce she is in fact teetotal ?

I totally agree with you there, Mr Russell. Having visited the new Grapes myself recently, I was nothing less than amazed at how well it had been renovated. I also read Ms McAllister's article - the food there was good, but not any better than The Blenheim's or The Bear's - and I agree with you that it would have been nice to have read about the beers. Even the lagers at the new Grapes are a welcome change - Bruges Zot on tap and the others seemed to be of the imported variety, rather than the usual fizzy pop you might expect. Well done to Bath Ales - I really hope that your new pub in Oxford is a storming success!
