Councillor Tanner (Oxford Mail, July 27) is clearly operating on the maxim of “the bigger the lie the more people it will fool” (based on a passage in Mein Kampf).
The Liberal-Conservative coalition in Westminster is grappling with the financial legacy left by Gordon Brown.
We have a debt mountain in this country of £900 billion that threatens our future prosperity. It was created over a nine-year period when Labour wasted the golden legacy they inherited and consistently overspent year-on-year, shoveling money into public services without any concept of reforming them and creating better value for money.
As a result, this country was ill-prepared for a worldwide recession and financial crisis. The children of South Oxford for whom Mr Tanner is shedding some crocodile tears need to understand it was Gordon Brown that mortgaged their future and robbed them of their playground, but it is them and their children and, perhaps, their grandchildren who will go on paying for Labour’s mistakes.
Keith R Mitchell, Leader of Oxfordshire County Council

The Liberal-Conservative coalition in Westminster is grappling with the financial legacy left by Gordon Brown.
So that will be partly due to the deficit brought about by Labour having to borrow money to bail out the stock market/banking fiasco brought about by greedy Tory voting traders taking silly risks with our money then. Now sorry but I didn't hear any of the Tory bankers and traders holding up their hands offering to pay back all the bonus payments, or make good any of the trades that they made with OUR money, pension funds etc.
So yet again Mr Mitchell uses his position as council leader to hammer home party spin in the local press when his council were also guilty of overspending and not making economies along the way over the last decade, so in fact were knowingly running an ineffiecent council at county level, and now seeks to blame others.
