IN DAVID Attenborough’s television programme The Blue Planet, he highlighted the problem caused by plastic in the oceans of the world. Since that programme, there has been a great deal of debate about what the answer is to overcome this problem.
It doesn’t seem likely that inland towns, such as Oxford, could have been contributing to the sea problem which must be down to coastal areas and shipping.
Plastic waste in landfill could be a problem. I have the impression that waste in this area is incinerated and the heat used to generate electricity – or am I being over optimistic?
Having said that, I’m confused as to what is recyclable. I know that clear plastic bottles are recycled as milk and soft drink cartons, but what about white plastic trays coloured, opaque and black plastics? Steel should be easy to remove but, what about aluminium, and is there any further use for glass?
I can’t be the only person who is confused so I hope that there is someone out there with answers.
