THE Office of National Statistics (ONS) reports the greatest level of public spending cuts has been aimed at the Department for Transport.

Transport cuts have led to poor road maintenance and with cold frosty winter season approaching, potholes will continue to multiply on Oxfordshire’s roads with the resulting damage to vehicles (Oxford Mail, August 21).

The ONS reports that debt payments from the Treasury accounts for 83 per cent of our nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The former Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, reported in 2011 that the daily interest payments for the nation’s debts was £120m; and much of this debts was caused by “bailing out” the banks in 2008.

With such a large percentage of the nation’s income being consumed by interest payments, poor road maintenance and potholes will continue to be a feature of Oxfordshire’s roads.
