I AM not quite sure what point Barry Gibbs is trying to make when he quotes half of my recent letter about Brexit.

The system currently used in the UK for elections or referenda means that they can be decided by the vote of a single person and we must accept this, however reluctantly in some cases.

That point which I was trying to make and which seems to have eluded Mr Gibbs, was “the British people” (which assumes all of us) has not “turned its back on Europe” and the result of the June Referendum was hardly an “overwhelming majority” as reported in some of the media.

Until we have a system similar to that in Australia where it is compulsory to vote and perhaps the requirement of a 60/40 majority, we shall have to accept the current decision to leave the EU, however narrow and mistaken many of us believe this to be.
