MANY motorists may agree with me that it is high time to bring back downlighting at either side of all the pedestrian crossings in Oxfordshire.

The only well-lit zebra crossing I have observed was noted outside Bicester Police Station, in Queens Avenue.

The lights on each side of that crossing show a clear view to motorists and cyclists, giving them plenty of warning when the crossing is being used.

Other similar crossings across the city and county roads appear to have no such extra lighting at all.

Surely Oxfordshire County Council and other such road safety organisations such as ROSPA should be contributing to the safety of pedestrians.

Just drive down the Cowley Road where the high density of pedestrians crossing at poorly-lit crossings is so evident and is also unfair for the vision of drivers on the roads.

Who is responsible for correcting the amount of nonworking street lights within Oxford? Whoever it is should be drawing a P45 as they are not up to the job.

Recently, the lights along the whole of the south side of Magdalen Bridge were not working and today the street light immediately above the well-used west side of Banbury/South Parade Crossing was not working either.

Let’s look after all road users and have better lit highways or will we hear a mumble about ‘light pollution’ coming from the ‘green environmentalists’.

I hope sense prevails and this matter is addressed.
