IT WAS good indeed to read the obituary appreciation of Stephen Moorbath (November 24), a remarkable figure in so many ways, not least in his gift for friendship.
As was apparent from his “packed” funeral at Oxford Crematorium on October 31, Stephen was a person of many lives and many friends, within and beyond the scientific community of which he was such a brilliant member.
The extraordinary writer scientist, Primo Levi, wrote that: “Each of us bears the imprint of a friend met along the way; in each the trace of each.”
To have met Stephen along the way was to have received life-enhancing traces and stimulations and acts of kindness.
As recalled in the tributes to him on October 31, Stephen was also a pun grandmaster, and not just in English. A great scientist, great friend, great Oxonian.
