HAZEL Dawe’s complaints about cars parking in cycle lanes (Oxford Mail, September 27) are symptomatic of the lack of a cycling culture in the UK – yes, even in Oxford.

What Hazel needs to happen is for the cycle lane in Barns Road to be wider and separated by a kerb from the road, with the kerb performing the same function as for pavement and road.

Parking for cars needs to be on the road but on the road side of the cycle lane, not the pavement side.

Cyclists then continue uninterrupted and in safety, with people getting in or out of parked cars waiting for the cycle lane to be clear before crossing it. Bus stops should also be on the road side of the cycle lane, with cyclists stopping only to let passengers cross the cycle lane as they get on or off a bus.

Where the cycle lane goes past a turning, the cyclist must have right of way, with the driver giving way to cyclists before crossing the cycle lane.

Make sense? The net result is three clear, safe and separate rights of way in this order: pedestrians, cyclists, drivers.
