YOUR recent article about overgrown vegetation in Mud Lane (“Branch obstacles to be cut on path”) rather surprised the Witney Woodland Volunteers who spent last Monday morning clearing this area. It seems that you and Cllr Bartington, rather than thanking volunteers for their work around Witney, are telling the WWV that they are liable for tasks generally accepted as being the responsibility of local councils.
That is not the case and never can be. If it were, there would be few volunteers prepared to give up time gladly, rain or shine, to clear litter, trim back overgrowing vegetation and generally make Witney a more agreeable place to live. Passers-by often thank us as we are working, and we find this encouraging. We do what we can as volunteers. If any Witney residents would care to join in with our efforts, we would extend them a warm welcome.
