WHAT a topsy-turvy country we live in. With deep cuts to all kinds of public spending our MPs have voted to waste £205 billion on renewing Britain’s Trident submarines and nuclear missiles.

Well done to Labour MP Andrew Smith for arguing that nuclear weapons are immoral, expensive and useless. Instead of negotiating for all nuclear states to reduce their numbers of nukes, the Tory Government is building even more missiles.

Prime Minister Theresa May says she would press the nuclear button. But what use are nuclear weapons against terrorist attacks? Would she really risk an all-out nuclear war if Europe was threatened by Russia? It has over 30 times as many warheads as the UK.

August 6 and 9 are the 71st anniversaries of the terrible nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Two bombs killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. We should be renewing our commitment to peace, not renewing our doomsday weapons of mass destruction.
