In the Oxford Mail of July 2 - Somme Centenary - there was a section on Company Sergeant Major Edward Brooks VC. This seems to imply that he first saw action during the Battle of the Somme in July.
In fact, CSM Brooks was serving in 2/4th Battalion of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry which was based in Laventie sector from May until the end of October 1916 - over 50 miles from the Somme.
He certainly saw action in the Laventie sector which included the 2/4th Battalion having a minor role in the Battle of Fromelles in July.
