WE live in a rural community where it is uneconomic to provide a bus service for all, so we need a hub system of convenient park and rides as far out of Oxford as possible – ie. Carterton and Witney – where, according to Oxfordshire County Council, 70 per cent of the traffic emanates.

This would encourage and maximise public transport use.

The A40 should then be returned to a three-lane system as it was in the 1960s with ‘priority east’ into Oxford during the morning and ‘priority west’ in the afternoon effectively creating a “peak time dual carriageway”.

This has worked successfully in other cities for years and could provide a lower cost option before eventually dualling the road.

This would increase the capacity of the A40 and reduce rat-running through other areas including the A4095.

Finally, upgrades to the Wolvercote roundabout should be included to reduce the bottleneck at Oxford.
