IN 2015 the reconstruction of two roundabouts and half a mile of A40 dual carriageway is due to take 16 months and Network Rail’s reconstruction of First Turn bridge is to take nine months (having dithered for four months so that it now coincides with the other scheme).
In 1959, above, the M1 motorway construction of 73 miles of six-lane road, 88 culverts and 132 bridges took 19 months – mostly without hydraulics or current technology.
Who are these 21st-century contractors who need so long to get a job done? Can someone explain this lack of progress?
