LEN PORTER says I have got it wrong (Oxford Mail, July 10) in implying the elderly are dying out.

Most of our elderly are baby boomers of the 1940s, when there was a massive baby boom. These are the ones who are in increasing numbers per year dying.

Many of the pre-retirees are overweight and will be lucky to live long enough to become elderly, so that explodes his theory that the elderly are being replaced one for one.

And his fear that there will not be enough houses for the young is mitigated by the fact that as a bigger percentage of the elderly die per year, more dwellings become available. Perhaps Mr Porter has statistics on his side – they are lies. Damned lies and statistics.
