DOGS Die In Hot Cars is the message that appears, evidently, not to have reached many people during this heatwave we are experiencing in Oxfordshire and across the UK – should anyone in their right mind need reminding.

During searing temperatures this week, two horrific incidents occurred (and probably many others which we never hear about) of dogs dying after being left in locked cars as a result of careless, thoughtless owners walking away to shop or whatever excuse given.

They evidently went off without a second thought.

Leaving windows closed or slightly open and leaving a bowl of water is useless.

At present, many people are finding the outside temperatures difficult to deal with.

Inside a car it quickly becomes an oven.

Dogs panting for breath are on their way to having a “heat stroke” which kills very quickly.

It is a wanton act of cruelty.

These dogs would have suffered an agonising death after being left in these vehicles by their thoughtless owners.

Such people should never be allowed to own another animal again.

If the public see a dog in a car on a warm/hot day, please contact your local police immediately as they must respond and have the power to enter the car in whatever way is necessary.

Thames Valley Police can be contacted on its non-emergency number 101.

The message is, never leave a dog locked in a car.

It is an offence.
