WELL, after the most drawn-out General Election in living memory we can finally get back to sleep again, or can we?
The sitting incumbent in Oxford West and Abingdon, Nicola Blackwood, romped home with 46.3 per cent of the votes cast (26,153) whilst the combined opposition gathered 53.7 per cent of the votes cast (30,305) thanks to our dysfunctional and archaic voting system.
We now have an MP who represents a minority – a sizeable minority of course but still a minority – while a majority of the electors of Oxford West and Abingdon are effectively disenfranchised.
Our parliamentary representative will no doubt continue to support the rights of non-resident, non-taxpaying billionaires with their vested interests, in ensuring that the UK’s broken electoral system continues to support them for another five years.
Rectifying this situation will require the adoption of proportional voting.
Postcards to the usual place as and when anybody thinks this might take place?
