People are right to emphasise the potential for the improvement of Broad Street now the magnificent Weston Library has been so successfully completed, and to point out the omission of trees in the scheme presented by Wilkinson Eyre.

The Forest of Oxford has been campaigning for trees to be planted throughout the the city centre, and in its leaflet Trees of Oxfords Historic Centre, illustrates a scheme for Broad Street, that shows how trees can be incorporated.

Cars could also be parked under the trees, similar to St Giles, and small-scale trees planted such as gingko, birch and dawn redwood, so that the surrounding historic buildings are not obscured.

Oxford needs a place where visitors and residents can sit in the shade with cafes and restaurants watching the world go by, an experience that can be enjoyed in the majority of the great European cities.
