I WATCHED the leaders’ debate but was infuriated at how David Cameron lied through his teeth by saying he had dementia patients care at the heart of his plans and he had invested millions of pounds to the NHS for dementia care.

I just can’t see how he can stand in front of the country and make such claims.

My mother has been treated for dementia for a few years but 18 months ago had a fall at home and was admitted to a local hospital where her condition deteriorated. She was kept in the hospital for six weeks and assessed that she was not in a condition to be able to be released home and continue her life with my father (who has his own medical problems) and, therefore, she would need to go into care.

We were told at a meeting involving medical staff and social services that as dementia was not classed as a medical condition she could not be cared for by the NHS, therefore, she would have to be placed in a local care home suggested by Oxfordshire County Council at a cost of over £1000+ plus per week.

She was there happy in her own world until her money ran out and social services said she would have to be moved to the nearest council-run nursing home that was some 20 miles away and impossible for my father to visit her. If Mr Cameron was honest, he has turned looking after the elderly with dementia into a multi-million pound business.

He has no regard for the fact that these people for over 60 years have worked, supported, lived, contributed and in many cases fought for their country. Shouldn’t they be given some respect?

If Mr Cameron feels fit to consider his government’s care of these people a cause for some pride, then I am certainly not impressed with his way of gaining votes.
