I am surprised that in the headline to an article (December 4) about by-elections you chose to refer to Val Smith only as an “MP’s wife”.

Why could she not have been referred to as a woman and ex-councillor in her own right, especially given her record of public service?

Her husband’s occupation was not relevant to the story.

Many readers will know that she is the wife of Andrew Smith, MP for East Oxford, but those who do not would have been little the wiser since he was not actually named. I look forward to seeing a headline about Andrew Smith in which he is described only as “Ex-councillor’s husband”. Otherwise please keep up the good work.
