It was with great pride and humility that we had the privilege and pleasure of laying the wreath on behalf of Witney Town Council and the residents of Witney on Remembrance Sunday.

On behalf of Witney Town Council we would like to thank and congratulate all those who took part in this year’s very special Commemorative Remembrance Parade. It was truly amazing to see so many organisations come together, representing both young and old.

The weather was beautiful, and it was so heartwarming to see the young people of Witney take the day so seriously, standing alongside the veterans on parade, reminding us of how many true, modest heroes we have in this wonderful community of Witney.

We are all aware that there is no discrimination in the terrible loss of life or injury resulting from any war.

Today’s letters

We were remembering the generations lost and those injured of all ages, religions, faiths or, indeed no faith, and all nations. We would like to thank the public, for an incredible and possibly unprecedented turnout.

It is clear that the people of Witney care very deeply about our serving forces, both from the past and in present conflicts.

Special thanks go to many but in particular the Royal British Legion, Rev Toby Wright and Ministers for the Commemorative Remembrance Service at the War Memorial, Civic Service, Churches Together and everyone who was involved in the planning and planting of eight beautiful oak trees, in commemoration of the centenary anniversary of the start of World War One. These trees, provide a living memorial to be enjoyed by all, for many years to come, on the wonderful ground of The Leys.

The message of this Commemorative Remembrance Sunday was one of Peace, Hope, Friendship and Freedom.

Cllr Jeanette Baker, Mayor of Witney, Sharon Groth, Town Clerk
