I read with interest Andy Ffrench’s front page article on unblocking the A34 (November 24).

I am sure I recall in the past, on attending a meeting in Botley when plans were laid to widen and join the A34 to the then new M40, a representative from the county council, when concerns were raised about increased traffic flows on the A34, said in their opinion there would be no appreciable increase as most north and southbound traffic would use the M25 and M4. What a gaff, as almost immediately junction 9 on the M40 opened traffic levels began to rise in both directions on the A34.

Oxford Mail:

Traffic builds up along the A34

Why not dig a tunnel and go under Botley?

If it is possible to tunnel right across London for the Crossrail link, with the problems and adversity that are involved, then it should be possible to do the same under Botley to create a north-south corridor.

Today’s letters

Surely it’s no more far-fetched than Ian Hudspeth’s idea for a bus lane tunnel under Oxford.

If all parties involved are serious about pulling the Botley cork, then how about giving the idea some serious thought?

I appreciate the costs would surely be higher but the longer this problem is left unresolved the more expensive it will certainly get.
