The visualisation of the new Exeter College building which is under construction in Walton Street takes an aerial view and does not illustrate the full extent of the height and its impact. The apparently reflective stainless steel cladding, as depicted, is not remotely sympathetic with the stone and brick character of the local area, giving instead the appearance of an industrial warehouse.

Oxford Mail:

An artist’s impression of Exeter College’s redevelopment of the old Ruskin College building in Jericho

By contrast, over the last 18 years, there have been several significant developments built in the same street by Worcester College which have been entirely harmonious. We urge city councillors on the west area planning committee, who have the delegated responsibility to approve the roof (or “cloak”) materials, to consult publicly on such a significant decision for Jericho.

As things stand, this decision will be made privately by designated members of the committee without public scrutiny or independent expert analysis. With the Castle Mill flats the actual effect was only known once the building had been completed. Oxford should be capable of learning from its mistakes.
