Both Oxford City Council and the county council seem obsessed with cyclists with vast sums of money being spent on so called improvements for this minority group.

Many of these cyclists are inconsiderate, a danger to pedestrians and other road users as well as themselves – perhaps encouraged by the status given to them by the councils.

Many seem to be colour blind — ignoring red lights and zebra crossings do not exist as they speed between unwary pedestrians who are crossing.

Crowded footpaths are a ready made fun obstacle course with pedestrians being the obstacles. Cornmarket and Headington shopping area are prime sites.

Today’s letters

The amount of cyclists without lights was highlighted in the Mail recently. Bus drivers need a sixth sense to anticipate the cyclist intent on getting past their bus on the blind inside.

It is about time the councils diverted some of this money to maintaining services and thinking of the safety of pedestrians, by providing crossings in such places as the A40 Collinwood Road junction. Also the police and PCSOs should uphold the law and book cyclists who abuse it. Perhaps it’s time cyclists pay road tax and be insured as are motorists.
