In being “polemical” and ending by asking “how many bus drivers, or for that matter, car or motor lorry drivers have been killed by cyclists in Oxford”, Dr Jan-Georg Deutsch is inviting a reply. This must be that it is not the drivers, but the vehicles that are responsible, just as some cyclists, and not bicycles, are responsible for accidents. In fact, drivers sometimes anticipate and save cyclists from the consequences of their irresponsible cycling. It is pleasing to note that some schools are now providing training for cyclists.
On the question of cycle lanes, I understand that the Department for Transport does not recommend them in urban areas because of the problems they create at intersections with side streets and, I might anticipate, at bus stops. It would be interesting to see a sketch of a proposed Oxford cycle lane for example in Cowley Road.
