As a boy I used to swim in Hinksey swimming pool but have not done so as an adult. Having passed the pool many times on my cycling trips to Oxford I often thought what a pity it was that the pool had been left to deteriorate.

Recently a friend, knowing my dislike of noisy indoor pools, suggested that I revisit it as it had been given a new lease of life.

What a lovely surprise. The grounds have been landscaped and the buildings have been given a coat of paint.

The staff are helpful and friendly and the water is kept clean and warm. There are also excellent showers and a well used shop to buy refreshments.

I have since spent several mornings there and it has been good to see that it has been used by many people of all ages, not only for swimming but also for picnicking. It was also a pleasant experience to swim in the rain – something I hadn’t done for years.

It brought to mind the old ‘lidos’ of the past. Well done Oxford City Council. It must be one of Oxford’s best kept secrets.
