Suzanne McIvor’s letter (August 1) suggests new roundabouts should be seen to ease the congestion around the city’s main intersection points.

Has she not been through the Green Road Roundabout at Headington which seems to cope well until some driver gets irritated by a few seconds wait until his route through gets the green light? Most of our our roads are overloaded with more traffic than they were designed for, but no new money has been forthcoming for useful improvements for around 40 years. It is the same all over the uk with everyone wanting unhindered progress from home to destination as if they have a right of way over all other drivers going in the same direction. We all must be patient and respect others right of way.

Ms McIvor points out that the traffic lights at Frideswide Square may be replaced by roundabouts which make congestion worse. Perhaps the traffic lights could cope better if positioned within a roundabout? Without lights numerous small collisions occur as drivers try to skip around the wrong lane to gain a few car lengths. My mother always taught me that patience is a virtue, a shame I don’t see it everywhere.
