Sadly, I had to put my dog to sleep at my vet in Kidlington on May 13, aged 13 and a half, with arthritis.

They were excellent and sent me a lovely card a few days later expressing their condolences.

When I came to claim for the cost of euthanasia for ‘Brandy’ I was astounded that my insurance company refused to cover this. It came to £160 but they said their ‘terms and conditions’ do not include putting your pet to sleep.

Over the 13-and-a-half years I have paid approximately £5,000 and received in claims around £300.

They sent me a form to send to the ombudsman which will be a long process and not much chance of success. What I want to let pet owners know is to check your policy. You could pay pet insurance for 17 years and the only time you need to claim is putting your ‘friend’ to sleep and these companies won’t pay – so please check.
