COUNCILLOR John Tanner says the Labour-run city council has written to the county council asking it to disinvest its money from fossil fuel companies. That’s odd, I can’t recall the issue coming to the city council and a motion being passed about fossil fuels disinvestment.

I wonder if Cllr Tanner could supply the date of the council meeting where this was discussed and the item number on the agenda.

What I suspect he means is when the Greens on the county council moved a disinvestment motion, and he and the other Labour councillors actually voted against it, somebody noticed the usual yawning gap between rhetoric and reality. In a panic, he ran over to his mate Bob Price, and asked him to write a letter to the county. A councillor writing a letter is not the same as a full council resolution.

The argument it’s pointless moving any motions in the county because the Tories are in control leads to the question: why are you there? It is not an argument for actively voting with the Conservatives.

Perhaps Cllr Tanner can make amends by voting for disinvestment motion that the Greens will be moving at the next city council.

Cllr DAVID WILLIAMS, leader of the Greens, County Council, London Road, Oxford
