WE are endlessly told how about our rising obesity. Diabetes alone costs the NHS a great deal of money. Temple Cowley Pools and gym tick all the health, sport, leisure and recreation boxes.
Cowley is densely populated and is in the process of building a new primary school adjacent to St Gregory the Great. This makes four primary schools within walking distance of Temple Cowley Pools, gym and library.
An already densely populated area with plans to build housing on the City Works depot in Marsh Lane as well as the Temple Cowley Pools site, will only increase the population and the pressure on leisure facilities which are sadly lacking in Cowley.
Yes, Temple Cowley Pools does need to be rebuilt with a better carbon footprint and yes, ‘Save Temple Cowley Pools’ are in a strong position to get the likes of Lottery funding.
If Temple Cowley Pools is closed, it will mean that Oxford city has six less swimming lanes and one nursery pool less overall. New housing brings in ever more council tax, part of council tax goes towards leisure facilities, yet this council is planning to cut back six swimming lanes.
Yes, the council has good financial reasons to save money but at the expense of Cowley.
A compromise with partial housing development and rebuilding Temple Cowley Pools is needed.
