I WAS very pleased to see Hugh Jaeger’s recent letter about the trams the other day.

Several years ago, after a visit to Geneva, you published a large letter from me relating to six tram routes and a trolley bus route for Oxford. Some years before that I wrote about trams and Mr Bob Price was supportive but felt it was too expensive at the time. I see his support remains.

Comment has been made about expense. In the last three years I have been to Budapest, Krakow and Dublin, all of which have extended their tramways within that time. Bearing in mind that the first two towns are in countries with a poor economy. There is little doubt we are lagging behind Europe in particular regarding transport. We have just got to spend the money and have cleaner air. The passenger service to Cowley is excellent and would fit in with a tramway system although I have doubts about a monorail in the city centre. The tramway could include a route to Witney which is certainly needed. I never thought 25 years ago that I would ever see tramways in Britain, of which we have several excellent ones, or the re-introduction and extension of so many tramways in Europe. Let’s be ambitious.
