I WAS very concerned and disappointed to see that Picturehouse Cinemas, who own the Phoenix in Oxford, is refusing to pay their employees at their Ritzy Cinema in Brixton, London, the London living wage of £8.80.

This company hosts Human Rights film festivals, sells fairtrade chocolate and supports various charities, while not currently paying a living wage to their staff in Brixton.

I was one of Picturehouse Cinemas’ first general managers working at their sites in Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon and was pleased to return to Oxford temporarily last year. I have now retired.

The company made millions of pounds’ profit last year and is now under the ownership of Cineworld.

I am very sad that the staff have to go on strike this Friday because of this. It is my sincere hope that management will offer their employees the London living wage of £8.80 an hour.
